‘Round the Square: What’s ‘down time’?

TIME: Have some downtime over the holidays? Maybe it’s time to learn something.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology — MIT — has a website devoted to sharing Open Educational Resources from MIT.

“Knowledge is your reward. Use OCW to guide your own life-long learning, or to teach others. MIT does not offer credit or certification to users of OCW – and asks for nothing in return.

“No enrollment or registration. Freely browse and use OCW materials at your own pace. There’s no signup, and no start or end dates.

“Made for sharing. Download files for later. Send to friends and colleagues. Modify, remix, and reuse (just remember to cite OCW as the source.)”

There are courses with instructor insights made for teachers, “covering topics such as course design, active learning methods, and strategies to engage learners.”

“OCW includes a growing collection of free open textbooks, perfect for educators to use and adapt in their teaching, and for all learners to guide their studies.

“These free online MIT courses feature sequences of short videos with auto-graded assessments for instant feedback. Like OCW, the Open Learning Library is always open for self-guided learning, and does not include live support, discussion forums, or certificates of completion.”

It’s meant to be free access to knowledge. One can learn Japanese, Chinese, learn about thermodynamics and climate change, psychology, and an interestingly titled “The Torch or The Firehose: A Guide To Section Teaching.”

Maybe the Relationship Between Language and Thought Beyond Cross-linguistic Differences isn’t one’s idea of restful time spent, but you might be surprised by what you find.

It’s free, easy to access, not graded, downloadable so you can read at your own pace, and it’s actual courses offered at MIT.
