Brenda Douglass-Thorne

Brenda Douglass-Thorne, 90, of Lecanto, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2025, at the residence of her daughter, who was by her side when she passed.

Born May 5, 1935, in Sunderland, England, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret Clough Cowen.

She was a 1952 graduate of St. Bennetts Catholic School in Sunderland.

On June 7, 1954, in Sunderland, she married William Edward Douglass, who preceded her in death. She and her husband moved to the United States in 1966 and settled in Wilmington, N.C., where she worked as a dental hygienist. In 1971 she moved to Bradford, where she was employed at JCPenney Department Store.

On Feb. 11, 1980, she married G. Derek Thorne and they resided in Lecanto. He preceded her in death on July 4, 2025.

She enjoyed many things throughout her life but always enjoyed a good game of dominoes. She loved to travel and enjoyed the many cruises they took. She was a member of the British American Club in Lecanto.

Surviving are one daughter, Christine (Greg Ulyan) Hannon of Bradford, two sons, Peter (Suzan) Thorne and Ian Thorne, both of England; nine grandchildren, Melissa Hannon, Kylie (Seth) McCleary, Robert Hannon and William “Joey” (Bethany) Hannon, Chloe (Rob) Howard, Noah Thorne, Luke Thorne, Ethan Thorne and Ben Thorne; five great-grandchildren, Jessica Hannon, Abby (Aaron) Stives, Griffin McClearly, Reid McCleary and Thomas Howard; three great-great-grandchildren, Adalynn Stives, Grayson Lundy and Ayden Stives; one sister, Margaret Gustard of England; and many nieces and nephews as well as brothers- and sisters-in-law in England. She had many good friends in the U.S. and UK.

In addition to her parents and both her husbands, she was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Joseph G. Hannon; one great-grandson, Robert Douglass Hannon; and one sister, Valerie Raven.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2026, in the Divine Chapel at St. Bernard Church. Burial will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery.
