Hundreds of winter sports enthusiasts flocked to Ellicottville Friday for the opening day of ski season at Holiday Valley Resort. With the area steadily receiving snow during the past week, resort officials reported a base of eight to 28 inches in some areas. Five out of 13 lifts and nine out of 60 trails were open for skiers and snowboarders Friday afternoon, but those numbers are expected to increase in the coming days. On Saturday and Sunday, the resort plans to have open seven lifts and 13 trails — including the Rail Fun Park — with hours from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
