‘Round the Square: A quick refresh

REMINDERS: We’re sure you remember this stuff, but we’re going to take a moment to refresh memories.

Dress warmly. Wear multiple layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing. Cover your head and hands with a hat and mittens (which are warmer than gloves) and wear warm socks and waterproof boots.

Stay dry. Change out of wet clothing as soon as possible. Stay indoors during severe storms, and minimize your time outdoors during extreme cold.

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Protect from falls. Wear shoes with good traction, walk slowly and deliberately, keep your hands out of your pockets, and clear ice and snow from walkways.

Know the signs of frostbite. Be aware of symptoms like numbness, tingling or a burning sensation, and seek medical attention if you suspect frostbite.

Prevent pipe bursts. Know where your water shut-off valve is and how to turn it off in case of a burst pipe. Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Install and maintain carbon monoxide detectors. Ensure heating equipment, chimneys and vents are clear of debris and that generators are used outdoors only.

Prepare for power outages. Keep a winter survival kit with essential supplies in your home and car.

Check your vehicle. Before driving, check your tires, antifreeze, heater and defroster. Pack a winter survival kit for your car. Adjust your driving. Drive slowly and increase your following distance. Avoid distractions and give snowplows plenty of room.

Never leave your car running. Do not warm up or park your vehicle in an enclosed space like a garage with the engine running.

Bring pets inside. Keep pets indoors and check their paws frequently. Never leave them unattended in a cold car.

Check on others.
