‘Round the Square: Budget gift giving
GIFTS: It’s time to think about shopping for those on your Christmas list. Lots of disciplined buyers have been shopping all year long, but we have to confess, that isn’t us. We’re looking now at gift giving on a budget, while trying to support local businesses.
Frequently, with older folks on one’s list, they aren’t looking for “stuff.” Many people are downsizing, and a personal gift to help them be more comfortable, to give them a treat, or to help them stay engaged is optimal.
Handmade, do-it-yourself and personalized gifts are usually budget-friendly. Consider your holiday baking, and think about the folks who can’t or don’t bake. Maybe a gift of cookies, brownies, cake or some special and creative dessert would be a nice change.
Handmade items are appreciated, too. Warm socks, a blanket, mittens, a hat or something to keep them comfortable when they are relaxing would be a thoughtful and useful gift.
Another idea would be a self-care kit with items like lotion, a journal, pens or pencils with grips or easy flowing ink to make writing smoother. Or a photo album, picture frame or scrapbook filled with special memories.
Low-cost options might be a customized mug with a coupon for a drink at one of our coffee shops, or maybe a subscription box that keep gifts coming month after month.
Remember to set a budget for gift shopping, especially in years like this one where prices are rising. Track your spending. Start early — if you haven’t started yet, start making lists and think about what you can afford to spend.
Christmas isn’t about going broke to show your love for others.
