‘Round the Square: Erie pizza bomber

TRUE CRIME: Did you follow what’s become known as the 2003 Erie pizza bomber case?

You’ll be interested to know “Friends” star Courteney Cox is turning it into a movie, inspired by the 2018 Netflix documentary called “Evil Genius.”

The case involved a pizza delivery man named Brian Wells who had a collar bomb strapped to him when he robbed a PNC Bank on Peach Street in Erie. He was stopped by police in the parking lot of Eyeglass World in Summit Township, where he was cuffed and seated on the ground. The bomb went off before the Erie Bomb Squad arrived on the scene.

The bizarre case involved William Rothstein, who told police there was a body in his freezer that was put there by Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong. It was her boyfriend, James Roden, he said. He was killed because he threatened to go to authorities about the bomb plot, according to the FBI.

Diehl-Armstrong eventually implicated herself and Rothstein in the bomb plot.

Deadline.com says Aggregate Films and August Night are producing the true crime pic “Evil Genius” with Patricia Arquette and David Harbour starring and Courteney Cox directing. “Inspired by the acclaimed true-crime documentary series by Barbara Schroeder and Trey Borzillieri, the script was penned by WGA nominee Courtenay Miles.

“The film explores the true crime story of the infamous “pizza bomber” case — that delves into the more deeply human story of deception, desperation and the line between victim and villain. “‘I’ve been fascinated by Evil Genius since I first saw the documentary,’ said Cox ‘It’s stranger than fiction. At moments darkly funny and yet deeply emotional. A story about love, loneliness, manipulation and the people on the fringes who get pulled into something much bigger than themselves.'”
