‘Round the Square: ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’
STOLEN: TikTok has given new meaning to the title “Gone in 60 Seconds.”
Readers might recall that’s a 1974 film, remade in 2000 starring Nicolas Cage as a retired car thief forced back into the business to steal 50 luxury vehicles in 72 hours to spare his brother from a ruthless crime boss.
TikTok is a free app where people post short videos, usually less than 60 seconds long, about literally anything — reviews, dancing, cooking, comedy, rants, pets … you name it.
One viral 2022 challenge showed how to swipe certain models using everyday tools. That one left a mark, and it’s shaped like a Hyundai hood ornament.
Police reported increased theft rates of Kia and Hyundai models as a result of the TikTok video. Theft rates overall have decreased nationwide, although more than 850,000 vehicles were nabbed in 2024, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The highest risk for having a vehicle stolen throughout the first half of 2025 was reported in Washington, D.C., California and Nevada. The 10 most stolen vehicles in the nation so far this year are the Hyundai Elantra and Sonata, Honda Accord, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Honda Civic, Kia Optima, Ford F150, Toyota Camry, Honda CR-V and Kia Soul.
While rates also fell in Pennsylvania, it still ranks eighth for thefts by volume, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. During the first six months of 2025, there were 9,489 vehicle thefts — a 6% decrease from the prior year.
The Keystone State’s list of top picks has several models in common with the nationwide top 10, and a few additions: Nissan Maxima and Altima, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Infinity Q50 and Acura TLX.
Eleanor, the movie star 1967 Ford Shelby GT500, wasn’t on the list.
