‘Round the Square: Sleep-with-the-lights-on scary

MOVIES: Just how scared are you looking to be this Halloween? Are you looking more for comedy with mild fright, or sleeping with the lights on?

Classics like “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” are good for family viewing, as are films like “Hocus Pocus,” “Casper” and, depending on whether you can appreciate the low-brow genius of Jim Varney, “Ernest Scared Stupid.”

If you’re a fan of old Hollywood, the 1944 classic “Arsenic and Old Lace” starring Cary Grant is really an unmatched Halloween film. It’s more funny than frightening and really just a masterpiece.

For psychological thrills — like Hitchcock’s “Psycho” — there’s Stephen King’s “The Shining,” and in our opinion, who else could play that role of Jack Torrance other than Jack Nicholson? Nicholson’s intensity and creep-factor make films like “Wolf”  and “The Witches of Eastwick” good Halloween choices, too.

If gore is what you are looking for, Rob Zombie films would fit the bill. Remember Lew Temple, the nice guy who visited Bradford for “Unstoppable” when it filmed and when it was released? He’s in Zombie’s “Devil’s Rejects,” but he’s a bit … two-faced. Like we said, it’s gory. Are you a fan of the television show “The Office” and the actor Rainn Wilson who plays Dwight? He’s in “House of 1,000 Corpses.” His role is a bit … fishy.

Now for straight up scary. The films in “The Conjuring” franchise usually fit that bill. Of course, the classic film “The Exorcist” is frequently listed as the scariest movie of all time. The film “Sinister” from 2012 often makes the top part of the list, too. Stephen King’s “It” is pretty terrifying. And for a television show, “Evil” had some scream-out-loud parts.

There’s lots to choose from, or not to choose at all. Up to you.
