‘Round the Square: Always be snackin’

SNACKING: Kids are constantly on the go. And constantly looking for some kind of snack. The website for imthecheftoo.com has snack ideas and even clever presentation ideas that will make even the most discerning kids snap up those healthy snacks.

Apple Dipping Station — Simply slice a variety of apples (leaving the skin on for extra nutrients and color!), and arrange them on a platter. Offer a selection of dips, like peanut butter, almond butter, caramel sauce or yogurt dip — Mix plain yogurt with a touch of honey and cinnamon for a healthier option.

Baked Apples & Crumbles — Core apples (Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Braeburn work well), fill them with a mixture of oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a tiny pat of butter, then bake until tender.

Kids can help core the apples (with supervision!), mix the filling, and stuff the apples.

Apple Crumble/Crisp: A deconstructed baked apple, often easier for kids to assemble. Simply toss chopped apples with cinnamon, sugar, and a touch of flour. Top with a buttery oat crumble and bake.

Apple Cider: If a full-blown cider-making process isn’t in the cards, spice up store-bought apple cider with cinnamon sticks, cloves, and orange slices, simmering it gently on the stove. This is a wonderful warm drink for chilly evenings.

Apple Nachos: Thinly slice apples and arrange them on a plate. Let your children drizzle them with melted chocolate, peanut butter, or caramel sauce, and then sprinkle with their favorite toppings like mini chocolate chips, shredded coconut, chopped nuts, or even a few colorful sprinkles.

Don’t forget roasted pumpkin seeds. Kids can help separate the seeds from the pulp, rinse them, and then toss them with olive oil and their favorite seasonings, and then bake them until golden brown.
