‘Round the Square: ‘Spooky Scary Skeletons’

SONGS: Do you have a Halloween playlist? Should your musical tastes run to Rob Zombie and AC/DC, there’s not much to change for spooky season. For everyone else, Michael Jackson’s classic “Thriller” — featuring the voice of horror legend Vincent Price — is at the top of the list.

“Thriller” is 43 years old this year, but doesn’t hold a candle to the age of the next one. “Monster Mash” by Bobby “Boris” Pickett is 63, and remains a seasonal staple — “What ever happened to the Transylvania Twist?”

The Ray Parker Jr. classic, named the same as the film “Ghostbusters,” remains popular at 41 years old. “I ain’t afraid of no ghost!”

There’s “Spooky Scary Skeletons” by Andrew Gold, first released in 1996, and songs from the popular Disney film “A Nightmare Before Christmas” like “This is Halloween” from 1993. The song is available both with characters from the film — The Citizens of Halloween — singing it, and Marilyn Manson.

We can’t forget the song “Time Warp” from 1975, from “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” another Halloween staple. That’s probably all the further we should go into that masterpiece.

The 1984 song by Rockwell called “Somebody’s Watching Me” is a nice, creepy entry into the Halloween playlist.

There are so many others that could be added. The theme song to The Addams Family, the theme to the “Halloween” movies, “Witch Doctor,” and “Grim Grinning Ghosts.”

Of course there are villain songs from Disney movies that would make great additions to children’s parties, like “Poor Unfortunate Souls” from “The Little Mermaid,” “Be Prepared” from “The Lion King” and “Friends on the Other Side” from “The Princess and the Frog.”
