‘Round the Square: Suede shoes in brown, green or black, not blue

NU-WAY: Back in 1950, Nu-Way grocery store at 9 Main St. in Bradford had a nice, big ad for a sale for Labor Day.

We took a look at the prices, and used an inflation price tool online to see what that cost would be now. For example, a 5-pound bag of Fluffy White All-Purpose Flour was 39 cents. Using the inflation tool, that would be $5.24 now. Google tells us that’s about right.

How about 65 cents a pound for chuck roast? The inflation calculator says $8.74. Google says that’s way too high, estimating the cost at $3.99 a pound.

Kellogg’s Corn Flakes or Wheaties were 15 cents a package. That would be $2.02 now. It doesn’t say what size package, but we’re guessing we’d be hard pressed to find any cereal for that price.

A box of 50 tea bags was 45 cents, which is $6.05 today. We found them at $12.45.

At Olson’s, polo shirts were 88 cents, slacks were $2.88, girls’ blouses were 94 cents.

At Brown’s Boot Shop, suede shoes — in brown, green or black, not blue — ranged from $3.99 to $8.95. A new suit at Nichols would run you $45. If you picked the new Tempo Cloth, the cost was $50.

One might have Sunday dinner at Hotel Emery for $2 in the main dining room or $1.75 in the coffee shoppe. And the menu was stellar — filet mignon, broiled lobster tail, fried Long Island scallops, roast turkey or prime rib.

The Hotel Emery would hold a Candlelight Buffet Dinner in the main dining room on some weeknights, fun for the whole family, for $1.25 for adults and 75 cents for children.
