‘Round the Square: 80 years ago at Willow Dale
MONUMENT: Eighty years ago, on Sept. 26, 1945, the Lt. John C. Roche Post 212 Veterans of Foreign Wars announced its sponsorship of a monument to be erected in Willow Dale Cemetery, “in memory of men and women or all wars who served honorably and faithfully.” The announcement was made by Commander Clarence Masten.
He pointed out that the memorial plot was deeded with the stipulation that a monument of this type was to be erected after the end of World War II. A sketch of the proposed monument would be placed in the window of Emery Hardware for the public to see.
The Veterans Memorial Plot at Willow Dale Cemetery was dedicated May 29, 1944, and by this date, seven veterans had been buried there.
“Initial plans for the monument call for construction to be of Imperial Danby marble, the same material as used for the new Jefferson memorial in Washington, D.C. The memorial would be about 30 feet long and have a diameter of 27 feet.”
While the memorial did not end up made of marble, it still stands at Willow Dale, marking the veterans section with this at the top: They Rest In Honored Glory.
