‘Round the Square: Peak Pennsylvania peeping

PEEPING: We’re talking about autumn leaves. The newsletter The Keystone offered a list of where to go to see the best views of foliage in Pennsylvania — and of course, the Kinzua Bridge is on the list. What else?

Allegheny National Forest along Longhouse Scenic Byway, with peak foliage of late September through early October; Bucktail Overlook in Elk State Forest that overlooks the Simmemahoning Watershed, with peak season in early October; Bowman’s Hill Tower in New Hope, at Washington Crossing Historical Park, with peak foliage in mid-October; Great Allegheny Passage in Laurel Highlands, from Pittsburgh to Maryland where early October is peeping season; Hawk Mountain Sanctuary at Kittatinny Ridge in Berks County, with the season hitting in mid-October; Kinzua Bridge State Park in McKean County — “Good news, leaf-peepers: Ongoing repairs to the Kinzua Sky Walk, located within Kinzua Bridge State Park, have been halted for the fall. This means that the 600-foot structure, which sits 225 feet above Kinzua Creek Valley and offers panoramic views of the fall colors that will be dotting the valley, will be open through Halloween. Peak foliage: Early to mid-October.”

Also on the list is Pine Creek Gorge, also known as the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon at Leonard Harrison State Park. Peak peeping is early October; Ricketts Glen State Park in Luzerne, Sullivan and Columbia counties, where peeping is best from mid- to late October; and the Starrucca Viaduct in Susquehanna County, just south of the New York state line. It’s one of the biggest stone-arch bridges in the U.S. At almost 100 feet high, it’s an ideal spot to take in fall foliage, which is best in early October.

Pennsylvania is gorgeous, especially this time of year.
