‘Round the Square: Yinz know what we mean

KEYSTONE: There’s a Pennsylvania newsletter called The Keystone that we must recommend. It’s “Pennsylvania news you can use,” and we enjoy reading it at keystonenewsroom.com.

Here’s some of a recent article about Things Only People From Pa. Say Or Do. And it’s a hoot.

First is calling the state by its postal abbreviation. “PEE-AY” is acceptable in nearly every reference, isn’t it? We don’t hear New Yorkers saying they are from “NY.”

You have to buy beer and wine at different stores, usually. Those of us old enough to imbibe surely remember when no forms of alcohol were available at grocery or convenience stores. But we can remember when out-of-town friends would visit and be amazed at drive-through beer distributors where we didn’t even have to get out of the car.

Unique plurals for you all — yinz or youse, depending on whether you are closer to Da ‘Burgh or Philly.

Spend Fridays at local volunteer fire halls for the fish fry. And use that fire hall when it comes time for a venue for a wedding reception, too.

Of course, the Pennsylvania Dutch are mentioned, too.

We’re sure we can add some of these for folks from this region. How many times have you shouted out “There’s a Zippo!” during a television show or a movie? Or shown the movie “Unstoppable” to visitors and identified landmarks?

Many of us feel that connection to folks who spent time here filming that movie, too, like Denzel Washington, Chris Pine and Lew Temple. We know we’ve watched them in other projects and thought about their time spent in the region.

And celebrate our connection with “This Is Us” and Songbird Road.
