Mary Major
PORT ALLEGANY — Mary C. Major, 98, of Port Allegany passed away Tuesday (Sept. 9, 2025) at UPMC Cole, Coudersport.
She was born June 13, 1927, in Pittsburgh, the daughter of Peter and Mary Kotchey Meyers. On June 28, 1948, in Austin, she married Donald H. Major Sr., who died Sept 28, 2006.
Mary graduated from Austin High School. She had worked during World War II in Pittsburgh at a steel mill for a short period of time, before she relocated to Port Allegany and worked at the Port Allegany High School cafeteria. She also had cleaned at the former Canoe Place Inn.
Mary was a member of St. Gabriel’s Church of Port Allegany and was active playing cards in the local women’s card club in Port Allegany for many years.
She is survived by three sons, Donald (Barb) Major Jr. of Port Allegany, Gary (Cindy) Major in Georgia and David (Marcie) Major of Port Allegany; three grandsons, Shawn Major, Tim Major and Brady Major; two granddaughters, Lisa Exton and Leslie Vice; five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; sisters Doris McLaughlin of Port Allegany, Nancy Tanner of Bradford, Lorraine Stoops of Pittsburgh, Vera Kelley in Arizona and Rose Weimer in Florida;
and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Norma Houck; and two brothers, Jerry and Jim Meyers.
There will be no visitation. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, 2025, at Veteran’s Memorial Inc., 4743 Route 155. Burial will be in St. Gabriel’s Cemetery.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
