‘Round the Square: Benefits of cats

KITTIES: We’ve had some stories lately explaining the needs of the volunteer organization No Feline Left Behind. We wanted to share how adopting a kitty from the organization might help you.

The website Vet Explains Pets gives some benefits to having a cat — and it’s more than companionship and entertainment.

“Studies have shown that interacting with a cat can help reduce stress and anxiety levels. The act of petting a cat can release feel-good hormones in the brain, which can help improve your mood and overall well-being.”

There are health benefits too.

“Owning a cat has been linked to lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, and improved mental health. The presence of a cat in the home can help promote a sense of calm and relaxation, which can have positive effects on your overall health.”

Cats are adept at pest control, catching mice and other pests, which is very helpful for those in rural areas.

This one was a surprise. “Contrary to popular belief, owning a cat can actually help reduce the risk of developing allergies in children. Studies have shown that exposure to cats at a young age can help build immunity and reduce the likelihood of developing allergies later in life.”

Kitties can be emotionally supportive. “Cats are intuitive animals and can often sense when their owners are feeling down or upset. They may offer comfort and companionship during difficult times, providing emotional support and a sense of security.

“Cats may have a reputation for being aloof, but they are also capable of forming deep bonds with their owners. The love and affection that a cat can provide is unconditional and can bring a sense of warmth and comfort into your life.”
