Extension to offer webinar series on septic system management

UNIVERSITY PARK — Homeowners, renters, property managers and real estate professionals can learn best practices for managing and extending the life of septic systems by attending a free, six-part webinar series hosted by Penn State Extension in September, October, and November.

The “Septic System Series,” all scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m., will include the following webinars:

  • “Septic System Basics,” Sept. 16. Designed for homeowners, property managers and anyone new to septic systems — or those in need of a refresher — this 90-minute session covers the essential components of septic system function, care and maintenance. Participants can gain a clear understanding of how a septic system works and practical tips to help extend its life and protect property and the environment.
  • “Alternative Septic Systems,” Sept. 30. In this webinar, participants will examine the types of alternative systems available, how they differ from standard systems and the unique maintenance considerations they require. The session also will highlight key factors to evaluate before installation, helping homeowners and professionals make informed decisions.
  • “Landscaping Around Septic Systems,” Oct. 14. Participants will learn how to safely landscape around septic system components while maintaining their function and protecting long-term system health. The session will cover strategies to avoid root damage, soil compaction and other common mistakes that can lead to costly repairs.
  • “Real Estate and Septic Systems,” Oct. 28. This webinar will explore what buyers and sellers need to know about septic systems during property transfers. The session will cover key considerations such as inspection requirements, system disclosures and what to expect during real estate septic inspections.
  • “Septic-Water Connections,” Nov. 11. In this webinar, guest speakers will share their experiences with facility construction — including what they might do differently. From early planning and feasibility to actual production, the session will cover key considerations for facility design, construction, equipment selection and infrastructure needs.
  • “Finances,” Nov. 25. During the final session, participants will explore the typical costs of installation and maintenance, potential long-term savings, and available financial assistance programs for homeowners.

Penn State Extension offers these events at no charge, but registration is required to receive the link to access each webinar. A link to the recorded webinar will be emailed to registrants within 10 business days after the live event. The recording will be accessible for six months from the event date.

More information about the series is available on the Penn State Extension website.
