Five area graduates have recently been awarded scholarships from funds stewarded by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation.

Adelyn Bell

Adelyn Bell of Otto-Eldred High School was awarded the Albert A. Bennett Jr. Family Scholarship, a $1,500 award.

Sue Bennett established the scholarship in memory of her husband to benefit a graduating Otto-Eldred senior pursuing a post-secondary degree at a two- or four-year institution. Recipients should demonstrate academic excellence, participation in extracurricular activities and strong educational/career goals. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett and their four children all graduated from Otto-Eldred.

Bell plans to study biology at Miami (OH) University.

Anessa Steel, also of Otto-Eldred, received the Fred P. Baker Memorial Scholarship for $500.

The Fred P. Baker Memorial Scholarship, established by Mr. Baker’s wife and son, Joyce and Steve Baker, is for a graduating student of Otto-Eldred High School who will attend a post-secondary institution, whether a trade school or a 2- or 4-year college. The student recipient must demonstrate hard work toward overcoming a challenge and a minimum GPA of 2.0. Mr. Baker was a graduate of Otto-Eldred High School and an active member of the Eldred community.

Steel plans to study agriculture and extended education at Pennsylvania State University.

Maddison Austin of Oswayo Valley Central School received the Gene and Sandra Froebel Teachers Scholarship for $1,000.

Established to honor the legacy of Gene and Sandra Froebel, two dedicated area teachers, this scholarship seeks to reward hardworking students who have overcome adversity, participated in high school athletics, were employed while attending school and/or volunteered to better their community and who are seeking to pursue a career in education.

Maddison Austin

Austin plans to study early childhood education at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania.

Jocelyn Alfieri and Kyra Shields of Smethport Area School District received the Kathleen Loop Snyder Memorial Scholarship for $1,000.

This scholarship, in memory of Kathleen Loop Snyder who worked for more than 30 years as a speech pathologist through the Seneca Highlands IU9, is for a student graduating from Smethport Area School District. Preference is for a student pursuing post-secondary education in a career/vo-tech field.

Alfieri plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford to study radiological science. Shields will study nursing at Penn State University.
