Girls Tennis

ECC 3, St. Marys 2

ST. MARYS – ECC claimed victories in two singles matches and one doubles match to defeat St. Marys 3-2 Thursday.

“Our girls battled through some mental adversity and a tough opponent and almost pulled it out tonight. Sara continues to show how tough a competitor she is at one singles. Isabella is a unique person and her tennis is as creative as she is. Her variety of shot making skills earned her a win at two singles,” St. Marys coach Tim Henry said. “Izzy struggled with her confidence and her opponent.

“The match hinged on the two doubles matches. Sam and Pilar are really developing the chemistry needed to play doubles  and starting to play an attacking style of tennis. Their win evened the match up at 2-2. The new team of Zoe and Anna started playing better after figuring some things out, but let their 4-2 lead in the second slip away. This is a loss we can learn from.”

Singles: Anna Biondi (ECC) defeated Sara Regulski, 8-6, 6-2; Isabella Farabaugh (SM) defeated Audree Meyer, 6-4, 6-4; Arianna Goroski (ECC) defeated Izzy Collins, 6-2, 6-1

Doubles: Samantha Kahnell and Pilar Pfoutz (SM) defeated Lilly O’Connor and Jolene Rippey, 6-4, 6-1; Emma Repko and Eva Corl (ECC) defeated Zoe Romanic and Anna Porkolab, 6-1, 6-4

“Saint Marys Area has a good team.  The match was very close as the Elk County second doubles team of Ava Corl/Emma Repko defeated the SMA doubles team Zoe Romanic/Anna Packolab 6-1, 6-4 to clinch the overall win 3-2. There were many good rallies but there are some technical aspects that need to be improved upon. I think the team adjusted to playing on the clay surface as best they could. It’s an unfamiliar surface to the team,” ECC coach Mike Jeselnik said. “I’m happy with all the matches. Again, we need to work harder to be better prepared to meet the teams who are getting better as we move into the second half of the season.”
