Add heifers to the list at TuckAway Angus
Susan Godfrey will freely admit that just more than 10 years ago she didn’t know the difference between a heifer and a cow.
Yet just this week Godfrey — who owns TuckAway Angus in Bradford with her husband, Dr. David Godfrey — took part in an Angus Hill production sale, where one of her heifers commanded one of the top bids, $30,000.
For those unsteeped in cattle terminology, a heifer is a young female bovine that has not yet given birth to a calf. A cow is a female bovine that has given birth to at least one calf.
Grimmius Cattle Co. of Hanford, Calif., purchased the Lot 6A offering at the Randolph, N.Y., sale, at which TuckAway Angus was a consignor.
Previously, The Era reported TuckAway’s “bucket list” Top Bull achievement at the 2024 Pennsylvania Bull Test, a 112-day program administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture with Penn State University, the Pennsylvania Cattlemen’s Association and state breed associations.
At the 51st annual auction in March 2024, Godfrey’s bull was one of three that commanded the top tag of $8,000. Then, earlier this year at the 52nd annual Centre County sale, TuckAway sold four bulls — two of them at the top of their lots.
So, in addition to top bulls and success, the Godfreys can add heifers to the list of things they’re breeding at TuckAway.
“I am really just a small operation that has sold some great Angus to a few people,” Susan said. She added, as the business’ slogan says, “Bred right, fed right.”
Farmers appreciate good genetics and are willing to pay top dollar for proven stock because it helps them ensure they’re making a good investment in growing their herds.
