Sizerville posts Labor Day slate
EMPORIUM — Sizerville State Park has posted its Labor Day weekend slate of environmental education programs.
First up, at 3 p.m. Saturday near Pavilion 3, is a stream study. Join the park educator to look for macroinvertebrates like stoneflies and crayfish in the stream, and learn their importance. A short talk will be followed by stream exploration; expect to get wet and bring along water shoes, swimsuits, and a towel.
Then at 8 o’clock that evening at the campground amphitheater, take in a Film in the Forest on osprey. Did you know that ospreys live on every continent except Antarctica? Join the park educator for a program to learn all about this fish hawk, then watch the movie. Feel free to bring snacks and a blanket.
Join volunteer Rodger Eckert and the park educator for a short Family Fun Bike Ride at 11 a.m. Sunday. Meet at the Environmental Learning Center and ride through Sizerville State Park, including East Cowley Run Road in Elk State Forest. Hear the park’s history and recreational opportunities along the way. The total bike route will be 6 miles; however, participants can leave the ride at any time. Bring your own bike, and all riders must wear a helmet. Snacks, water bottles and sneakers are highly encouraged. Online registration is recommended.
Step back in time with the park’s Dutch Oven Cooking program at 1 p.m. Sunday at Pavilion 5. Park volunteers John and Jan Halter will share Dutch oven cooking styles from the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) spike camp era. Samples of what is made will be provided at the end of the program.
Then on Labor Day, join the park educator and lifeguard team at 11 a.m. for Sizerville’s Splish Splash Bash, a fun, water-themed program for the pool’s closing day. Test your fishing skills and learn something about local aquatic critters.
To register for a program, go to the DCNR Calendar of Events website, search Sizerville State Park, find the program listed, and click on the Register button right under the program date, time, and location.
