Help Futures create something special
Futures Rehabilitation Center is planning something truly special for its clients — the organization’s first prom. The evening will be filled with music, dancing and friendship for individuals of all abilities.
The idea for this event has been in the works for some time.
“We have been talking about this for a few years but were never sure how the logistics would work,” said Brittany Keck, chief operating officer.
A generous venue donation has given the project momentum. While the prom won’t take place until May 2026, planning is already underway. Futures is now asking for the community’s help to make the event memorable. The center seeks prom dresses, formal attire for men, shoes, button-up shirts and decorations to transform the venue into an unforgettable setting. Closer to the date, volunteers will also be needed for things like hair, makeup, nails and food preparation.
“Some of our individuals don’t have the funds for formal wear,” Keck said. “These donations will allow them to have a full experience.”
No theme for the evening has been chosen yet.
“We will take any donated decorations and make them come together,” said Keck. “We are lucky to have a team of very creative individuals here.”
The night will provide a unique social opportunity for participants who have never attended a prom. Music is key to bringing this event together, Keck explained.
“Every type of event that we hold for our individuals usually has some type of music or dancing component, because they seem to really enjoy that,” she said. “We thought a more formal dance would be a great way to break them out of their everyday routines, let them relax and have fun with all of their friends.”
Extracurricular activities such as this are important for the community that Futures serves. The prom will be a chance to develop their social skills, build confidence and spend meaningful time with friends outside of structured programming.
“Many of our individuals either live in residential homes or small groups, so they don’t always have opportunities like this,” Keck explained. “This event gives them a safe atmosphere to be themselves and have fun with their friends.”
Keck added that Futures views the prom not only as an internal event, but also a community effort.
“We are always looking for ways to include our individuals in the community as much as possible,” she said. “This is a great way for everyone to get involved to create something special.”
Donations can be arranged by calling Futures at (814) 368-4101 and speaking with the administrative assistant to schedule pickup or drop-off.
As for the future, Keck said the organization hopes this prom can become a regular tradition.
“Depending on the success of this one,” Keck said, “we would love to do it again.”
