Steelers check in on Gabe Davis again as search for WR insurance continues
(TNS) —The Steelers may not actively be pursuing another wide receiver, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t exploring the possibilities.
Former Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Gabe Davis, best known for his four-touchdown performance in a wild 2022 AFC playoff game, visited the Steelers on Tuesday, but the trip was a medical followup and not an indication they are prepared to sign him, according to sources.
The Steelers had medical questions about Davis when he visited with the team during free agency.
Davis, 26, is also scheduled to visit the Bills on Wednesday in an attempt to show he is recovered from a knee injury sustained in the 2024 season.
The Steelers still have some uncertainty at wide receiver because Calvin Austin III, who is being projected as their No. 2 receiver, has yet to play in the preseason. His return remains unclear.
Davis had 163 catches for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns in four seasons with the Bills. He spent last season with the Jaguars and had 20 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns before injuring his knee in Week 11 and missing the remainder of the season.
But Davis captured the NFL’s attention when he had eight catches for 201 yards and four touchdowns in the Bills’ 42-36 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in a Jan. 23, 2022 AFC divisional playoff game.
Kuntz on the mend
The Steelers received some good news about long-snapper Christian Kuntz, who sustained a fracture in his sternum making a tackle Saturday night against Tampa Bay.
Kuntz is scheduled to be out a couple weeks, but it is conceivable he could be ready to return for the Sept. 7 opener in New York. If not, he should be back in the lineup by the Sept. 14 home opener.
Kuntz was in a lot of discomfort trying to get off the field and on the sidelines after making a tackle on Buccaneers punt returner Tez Johnson, likely saving a touchdown.
