Port Allegany teen killed in three-car crash
PORT ALLEGANY — Natale Redmond, 17, of Port Allegany was killed Friday evening in a three-vehicle crash on Route 6 in Liberty Township, just east of Davis Circle.
According to Pennsylvania State Police at Lewis Run, the incident occurred when an SUV allegedly driven by Redmond crashed into a second SUV operated by Corey Hildebrant, 39, of Port Allegany. Redmond’s SUV continued on its course, ultimately colliding with a truck driven by Michael Schmidt, 55, of Albion, N.Y.
Schmidt’s vehicle rolled down an embankment and ignited in flames. Both he and his passenger were able to escape the fire. Schmidt was flown to Penn Highlands DuBois for treatment of his injuries, while his passenger and Hildebrant were transported to area hospitals with lesser injuries.
The driver and passenger in the truck were able to escape the fire and were treated for their injuries.
Trapped inside her vehicle, Redmond died at the scene, according to reports.
Emergency responders from Port Allegany Volunteer Fire Department, Port Allegany Ambulance Service, Roulette Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance and Smethport Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene. Route 6 was closed to traffic for more than six hours.
While the crash has left many in shock, friends and family are remembering Natale not for the circumstances of her passing, but for the way she lived — with kindness, dedication and a bright spirit that touched everyone she met.
A longtime member of both 4-H and FFA, Redmond was a familiar face at the McKean County Fair, where she enjoyed showing market sheep. Her enthusiasm for agriculture and willingness to pitch in made her beloved by fellow exhibitors and organizers alike.
“To us here at the fair, she was more than just an exhibitor – she was like family,” fair officials shared in a heartfelt message on social media. “Always willing to lend a helping hand, her kindness and bright smile will never be forgotten.”
In her honor, a memorial bench has been carved and placed on the fairgrounds. In addition, proceeds from the fair’s 50/50 drawing Saturday were donated to the Redmond family. A fundraiser has been created to provide additional support. Links to the fundraiser can be found on the McKean County Fair’s Facebook page.
The fundraiser will remain open for two weeks, with all donations going directly to the Redmond family.
