Marshmellow Overcoat battles for Borderland
It’s down to the final four and Bradford’s own Marshmellow Overcoat is ready to turn up the volume. The band will take the stage as one of four finalists at the Battle of the Borderland Band Contest Finals Showcase, vying for the coveted spot at Borderland Festival.
The final showdown will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at Buffalo (N.Y.) Iron Works, where crowd enthusiasm will play a key role in the judge’s decision. Doors open at 6 p.m. at this adults-only venue. Tickets are $10 per person.
“We are really excited about it,” said frontman Tyler Calkins. “We have been a band for well over a decade now and we are happy to have made it this far in the competition.”
Calkins, along with drummer Anthony Cavallaro, bassist Dave Verbocy and guitarist Alan Hancock will perform a set of original songs, possibly with one beloved cover thrown into the mix.
The band is calling on hometown supporters to make the trip, cheer their hearts out and help them secure victory. Voting in the final round is based on both the judge’s opinion and audience turnout.
“Everybody who shows up is asked what band they have come to support,” Calkins explained. “Just showing up there counts as a vote for us.”
Calkins said that both factors are weighed evenly when choosing the final band.
“Two of the bands competing are from the Buffalo region so that makes it a little bit harder,” Calkins said. “But we are just excited to have made it this far and be performing in such an amazing venue.”
Buffalo Iron Works, located in downtown, regularly hosts national and regional acts.
“It’s kind of a mix between a theater and a bar,” said Calkins. “I wouldn’t say it is the largest place we have ever played, but it might be the most prestigious.”
If the band is chosen to perform at the Borderland Festival, they will have an audience of thousands. The festival, held each September, will feature national headliners including Mt. Joy and Vampire Weekend.
More than anything, the band is grateful for its supporters.
“We just appreciate the community support throughout the years,” Calkins said. “This is kind of a celebration, win or lose, and we just want to make sure we invite everyone.”
