Spaces remain available for Act 48 training at Pitt-Bradford
Area K-12 science teachers can still register for a free professional development workshop offered Aug. 11 at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford to earn Act 48 continuing education credits.
Dr. Ovidiu Frantescu, associate professor of environmental science at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, will lead the geology workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the university’s new Environmental Science Lab. Frantescu holds a doctorate in applied geology from Kent State University.
Participants will learn about identifying minerals; the three types of rocks and how they are in constant change; the connection between rocks and tectonic activity; natural events such as earthquakes, volcanoes and landslides; the role of water; and fossil identification.
Frantescu said he developed the workshop at the request of College in the High School instructors who wanted to include more geology in their environmental science classes.
College in the High School is a partnership between Pitt-Bradford and regional high schools that offers college-level courses in area high schools taught by high school teachers using Pitt-Bradford curriculum.
To register for the free workshop, contact Frantescu at odf1@pitt.edu or (814) 362-5106. Lunch will be provided.
