Tee times set for 89th annual Men’s Am tourney

OLEAN — The field for the 89th annual Southwestern New York-Northwestern Pennsylvania Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament is set.

A pool of 137 golfers – the fifth-largest field in its history – is scheduled to compete in this year’s event, which runs from Aug. 6-10 at Bartlett Country Club. That group features 121 paid registrations and 16 qualifiers from the Penn-York Junior Golf League, who earned a spot by having one of the best 18-hole scoring averages and had their entry fees covered by the tournament committee.

For the 25th consecutive year (and 26th overall), the tournament will open unofficially on Tuesday night with the Shootout of Former Champions, a seven-hole event which uses a steeplechase format. This year, seven former Men’s Am winners are expected to compete. Last summer, 2023 champion Corey Haas won it.

The tournament will begin in earnest with Wednesday’s 18-hole medal qualifying round.

The qualifier will slot the field into 32-man Championship and First Flights, with 16-player brackets filling out the remainder of the field. Match play begins on Thursday and Championship Flight losers will be slotted into a consolation flight. On Friday, the Championship, Consolation and First Flights will play two rounds and the other flights one, reducing the field to the semifinals. Semis in all flights will be played on Saturday morning with the finals scheduled for Sunday.

All flights play an 18-hole final except the Championship, which is 36 holes.

The 2025 field includes seven former champions: Haas, Spencer Cornelius (2022), Eric McHone (2003), Dan Reiley (1995), Jim Brady (1977 and ‘84), Scott Crist (2002, ‘09) and Andy Frank (2008).

Over-60 and 45-49 consolation flights will continue for players in those age groups who lost their opening-round match in any flight but the Championship. The top eight players, based on their qualifying-round score, will be re-bracketed in the new flight and compete in match play through Sunday’s final. The Over-65 flight will feature 11 golfers and represent a tournament within the tournament, with its own medalist and title.
