Warren teacher, Scout leader charged with corruption
WARREN — A Warren Boy Scout leader and middle school teacher has been charged with corruption of minors, for allegedly giving teenage boys alcohol and stripping naked in front of them.
Ryan Zavinski, 24, 114 Pioneer St., is charged with three counts of corruption of minors, third-degree felonies; four counts of corruption of minors, first-degree misdemeanors; and three counts of indecent exposure, second-degree misdemeanors.
Zavinski works at Beaty-Warren Middle School as a physical education and health teacher. The allegations in this case involved actions as a Boy Scout leader, police reported.
According to the criminal complaint, on July 10, a Warren City Police detective received a call from concerned parents, who said they received an unusual call from their son’s Boy Scout leader, Zavinski. He called them to commend them on raising an intelligent boy, and said his call was to “bring positivity to the world.”
Concerned, they called another Scout leader who is close to Zavinski. That person told them Zavinski had admitted he had a group of Boy Scouts over to his house, provided them with alcohol and had stripped naked in front of them, the complaint stated.
On July 24, the juveniles were interviewed. They said they were invited to Zavinski’s house between June 8 and 9 after an Eagle Scout ceremony. There, he gave them alcoholic beverages and liquor, causing them to become intoxicated, the complaint stated.
The group began to play the game “Trouble,” when Zavinski asked if they wanted to play the “strip version.” He said that version would require them to remove an article of clothing or take a shot of alcohol anytime a player was sent home on the game board. As a result, all players including Zavinski “were nude at separate times,” the complaint alleged.
The youths said they had been to parties at Zavinski’s home two other times, one of which involved alcohol. When police interviewed the other Scout leader, he said Zavinski was consuming alcohol at a July 4 party when he admitted to getting naked in front of the scouts, the complaint stated.
He was arraigned July 29 before District Judge Laura Bauer in Warren, and was released with non-monetary conditions. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 6 before Bauer.
