Penn State Extension workshop to focus on learning to dry hardwood lumber
UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State Extension will offer a three-day workshop for those interested in learning how to dry hardwood lumber to maximize product quality and value.
The “Kiln Drying of Hardwood Lumber Short Course” will occur from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 9, through Sept. 11, at the Livestock Evaluation Center, 1494 W. Pine Grove Road, Pennsylvania Furnace.
This introductory short course is designed for kiln operator trainees, plant managers and supervisors, or anyone who needs a basic understanding of drying hardwood lumber. No previous drying experience or training is necessary.
Participants will learn how to handle lumber before drying, as well as the steps involved in the process to dry hardwood lumber efficiently and with minimal defects.
Among other topics, participants will learn:
- Wood moisture relations.
- Kiln operation.
- Lumber handling and storage.
- Drying schedule preparation.
- Drying defects.
Organizers noted that space is limited, so preregistration is required. An early bird registration fee of $350 is available through Aug. 27. After Aug. 27, the registration fee will increase to $400. The registration fee covers lunch all three days.
