‘Round the Square: Bunked
LIFE AT CAMP: Remember being a kid, going to camp during the summer with a church group or scouts? We found a letter from Natalie Fesenmeyer reporting back on Aug. 10, 1948, of her Girl Scout trip to Camp Kil-O-Qua in Allegany State Park. Most of the letter follows.
“Dear Mom and Dad: Another Sunday has come to an end at Camp Kil-O-Qua. Gee, but it was swell to see all of you this afternoon. There certainly was a crowd of people all over camp. Almost everyone saw the exhibits at the craft house. Waverly Scheff did the cutest spotted dog. “Mohawk, our senior unit, had a buffet supper for us and presented a very good program. ‘Chief’ and her unit decorated the ‘Roof Tree’ with wild flowers, ferns and candles. Brownie headed the food department.
“After slipping down the hill (I do wish this heavy ‘dew’ would stop) we went to Scout’s Own. That’s sort of a ‘Sunday best’ campfire. Our unit gave the program and it really turned out very well. We carried out our theme ‘Night’ by poetry, song and friendship. I read Robert Louis Stevenson’s Escape at Bedtime.
“Our friend the raccoon came down again tonight. He is a darling little fellow and how he can keep so clean in this mud, I honestly don’t know. We have to work so very hard to do it.
It’s time for ‘Ocano’ to turn the lights out so I shall close for tonight. Give my love to my dear brothers but save lots for yourselves.
“P.S. Oh, I forgot to tell you. We had ice cream twice yesterday. Ann Markowitz’s mother and daddy sent it for dinner and Sandra Habgood’s mother and daddy sent it for supper.”
