August programs at Sinnemahoning State Park
AUSTIN — Educational programs have been scheduled to take place in August at Sinnemahoning State Park.
From 1 to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 9 will be an Ode to Odonata. Odonata is an order of predatory flying insects that includes the dragonflies and damselflies that rule the summer skies at Sinnemahoning. Join park educators for an up close investigation of these amazing creatures.
Meet at the 40 Maples Day Use Area.
From 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 9 will be a presentation in the Sinnemahoning History Series: Samuel Maclay. Before Lewis and Clark, there was Samuel Maclay. Maclay was a surveyor who embarked on an expedition in 1790 to the heart of the PA wilds region to survey the headwaters of the Susquehanna and Allegheny Rivers, keeping a diary of his experiences along the way. Later in life Maclay became a legislator and a judge. Explore his exciting tale in this one-hour program.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Aug. 10, Aug. 17, Aug. 24 and Sept. 1 will be pontoon tours of the Stevenson Reservoir. Join park staff for a relaxing and informative tour around the lake, as we cruise the shoreline of the George B. Stevenson Reservoir in search of wildlife. Group size is limited. To reserve a seat, pre-register. Registration is not required but is strongly recommended. Tours are also held at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Meets at the Lake Day Use Area. Register online.
From 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 16 will be a kayak nature tour. Take a relaxing paddle out on the lake in search of wildlife and recreation. Borrow the park’s kayaks and equipment or bring your own. Open to participants age 10 to adult. Group size is limited. Pre-registration is required. Indicate in the additional info section whether you plan to borrow the park’s boats and equipment or bring your own. Meets at the Lake Day Use Area. Register online.
From 1 to 2:20 p.m. Aug. 16 will be a crayfish crawl. Join a park naturalist in the water to catch and investigate the crayfish that live in First Fork Sinnemahoning Creek. Nets & equipment provided. Shoes that can go in the creek are strongly encouraged. Meets at 40 Maples Day Use Area.
From 9 to 10 p.m. Aug. 16 will be a Perseid Party. Try to catch the famous Perseid Meteor Shower. With bright meteors zooming in at about 1 per second, the Perseids are possibly the brightest and most famous meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere. Park in the gravel lot for the Wildlife Viewing Area. Walk down the Lowlands Trail about 100 feet to the Wildlife Viewing Area Field on the left. Bring a lawn chair, and wear insect repellant. Flashlights should be red light only. No pre-registration required.
From 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 23 will be a migratory bird walk. Fall bird migration starts earlier than you may think. Join a park educator in search of early migrating songbirds as they pass through Sinnemahoning State Park. Binoculars will be provided on a first come, first serve basis. From 1 to 2:30 p.m. Aug. 23 will be a program on elk management in Pennsylvania. Join Jeremey Banfield, the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s elk biologist, as he gives a presentation on how the PAGC manages one of the largest free ranging elk herds in the eastern U.S. Meets at the Wildlife Center Classroom.
From 5 to 6 p.m. Aug. 23 will be a History Hike: George B. Stevenson Dam. Come along for a 1-mile hike along the top of George B. Stevenson Dam. Learn about the construction of the dam, how it helps protect communities downstream, and why George B. Stevenson was a staunch proponent of flood control. Meet at the dam overlook parking area.
From 8 to 9 p.m. Aug. 23 will be a campground movie, “Fox Tales.” Join a park naturalist for a showing of “Fox Tales,” a PBS Nature documentary profiling the lives of red foxes around the world. Meet at the Campground Amphitheater.
From 8 to 9 p.m. Aug. 29 will be a campground movie, “The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies.” Join a park naturalist for a showing of the movie and learn about the Monarch Butterflies and their long migration down to Mexico. Meet at the campground amphitheater.
From 10 to noon Aug. 30, Ride the Rail Trail at the park. Enjoy a guided ride through the park on the Lowlands Trail. Bring your own bike or check out one of the park’s loaner bikes. A park educator will lead the trip. Pre-registration is required if you plan to use one of the park’s bikes. Meet at the Wildlife Center.
From 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 30 will be an introduction to archery at the Wildlife Center. Have you ever wanted to give archery a try? This program will cover the basics of archery, including bow types, shooting form, and safety. Open to participants ages 10 and older, this program requires pre-registration.
From 7 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 30 will be Trivia Night. Looking for a fun activity on Labor Day Weekend? Come on down to Sinnemahoning State Park and play trivia. This program is open to all ages and is a great family activity. A prize will be awarded to the winning team. Meet at the campground amphitheater.
From 5 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 31 will be campfire cooking. Join a park educator and explore an exciting new recipe that you can make using cast iron cookware and a campfire. Registration is required for this program. Meet at the Wildlife Center. Register online.
