Penn State Extension to offer webinar on home butchering
UNIVERSITY PARK — For those interested in learning about butchering at home, Penn State Extension is offering the “Living on a Few Acres: Home Butchering” webinar from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 14.
This session is designed for the beginning producer or homesteader looking to become more self-sufficient or take the first step in creating a product.
John Boney, faculty member in Penn State’s Department of Animal Science, will guide participants through key considerations for planning red meat and poultry harvest activities on their property.
Discussion topics will include navigating federal, state and local regulations; applying good manufacturing practices and food safety principles; addressing animal handling and welfare concerns; selecting effective stunning techniques; and following sanitary dressing procedures.
The session will conclude with an interactive question and answer segment, offering participants the chance to explore specific scenarios and deepen their understanding.
The “Living on a Few Acres” webinar series covers basic information on how to get started and provides resources with more advanced information for participants to continue pursuing goals or hobbies. Topics have included beekeeping, syrup making, vegetable gardening, tree and small fruit production, home food preservation, backyard greenhouses and other homesteading topics.
Participants must register by 6 p.m. Aug. 14 to receive the link to access the live webinar. A $5 registration fee accompanies the event. Registrants also will receive access to the webinar recording.
