It was definitely a day of celebration for the New York players Sunday, as both NY boys and girls took home the trophies for the silver and gold matchups during the ninth annual NY/PA Corporate Cup Soccer Showcase.
In the girls Silver Game, the final score was New York 4, Pennsylvania 0.
Olean’s Leea Kopp had the solo goal of the first half and also opened the scoring in the second half with a second goal. Wellsville’s Jaden Dunbar scored NY’s third goal and Wellsville’s Emily Stuck scored the fourth, allowing NY to take home the Silver trophy.
Before the Gold Game, four-year participation plaques were awarded. Representing New York were Addie Fisher, Abby Peck and Chloe Baker (all of Allegany-Limestone), and Cloey Larabee (Cuba-Rushford). Pennsylvania recipients included Kailey Bartlett (Port Allegany), Josie Orinko and Zoe Puhala (both of Brockway), and Ally Notarianni (Johnsonburg).
The New York Gold team claimed a 7-1 victory over the Pennsylvania squad.
The first six minutes of the face-off had impressive saves on both sides in goal as PA goalie Josie Orinko of Brockway, and NY goalie Chloe Baker of Allegany-Limestone, fought off the efforts to put the first goal on the scoreboard.
With 36:38 on the clock, Kylie Kress of Maple Grove was the first one to succeed, putting the Empire State ahead 1-0.
Pennsylvania’s Rheanna Spinda of Brockway found an opening at the 22:01 mark as the ball got past Baker and Spinda was in the perfect position to control the ball and send it careening into the goal to even the score at 1-1.
NY’s response was quick and effective as Abby Peck of Allegany-Limestone sent the ball over Pennsy goalie Mady Stark’s head and into the back of the net, putting NY ahead once again, 2-1.
New York added to its advantage with a second goal from Kress with 1:47 left and a goal from Grace Gariepy of Portville just as the clock was winding down for the half; providing NY with a 4-1 lead at the break.
Halftime was a chance for younger talent to compete for goals while others rolled around the field in inflatable balls.
The second half was a tale of defense and missed opportunities for over 18 minutes before NY’s Marlana Cresanti took her shot and saw success, making the score 5-1.
Looking to capitalize on that momentum, Cuba-Rushford’s Cloey Larabee scored with 25:28 on the clock, putting NY ahead 6-1.
A back-and-forth battle for ball control kept both teams on full alert for six minutes before Madison Honeck of Allegany-Limestone found a clear path into the net to give NY its final goal of the evening with 19:15 remaining in the game.
Following the game, awards were given for both sportsmanship and MVP. The Sportsmanship award for Pennsylvania went to Bradford’s Kierstin Taylor and New York’s went to Sara Kruszka of Pine Valley. The game’s MVP for Pennsy was Zoe Puhala and New York’s award went to Cloey Larabee.
