Events planned for Kinzua Bridge, Elk State parks
MOUNT JEWETT — Kinzua Bridge State Park Complex has events planned for upcoming weekends.
At noon Aug. 16, hike on the Kane Trail at Kinzua Bridge State Park. Join park staff for an adventurous hike of approximately one mile. The trail is rated easy. Participants should bring sunscreen and bug spray, and dress for the weather. Hiking boots are recommended. Meet in front of the visitor center.
From 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 16 and 17 will be Trestle Trivia. Sign up individually or as a team for a fun evening of trivia and put your knowledge to the test. Take part in a series of rounds that focus on topics specific to Kinzua Bridge, Pennsylvania, history and the natural world. Join us in the Visitor Center classroom to play just one round or stay until the end.
At 11 a.m. Aug. 23 will be an Intro to Geocaching. This will be a fun hunt to find several caches located in the park. We have GPS units available to borrow for this program on a first come, first served basis. Call the park office to reserve a unit for the program at (814) 778-5467. Meet in front of the visitor center.
From 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 23 and 24 will be a program on Monarchs and milkweed. Join staff outside the visitors center near the Skywalk to learn about monarch butterflies and their special relationship with milkweed. Learn about the monarch lifecycle, their incredible migration, and learn what you can do to help support them as they continue their journey.
From 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 30, at Elk State Park at Wilcox will be a free kayak paddle. Sign up for a free kayak program where kayaks, paddles, and life jackets are provided. Learn the basics of flatwater kayaking and water safety and then take a guided paddle up Seven Mile Run with DCNR staff. Participants must be 12 years of age and minors must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required for this program.
