Emery Gallup
SMETHPORT — Emery A. Gallup, 89, of Smethport passed away peacefully Wednesday (July 23, 2025) at Lakeview Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Oct. 12, 1935, in Smethport, he was a son of Alfred and Mable Wolf Gallup. On June 15, 1963, he married Arvilla D. “Arlie” Griswold in Port Allegany. She survives.
A graduate of Smethport High School, Emery worked as a machinist at the Quaker State Refinery in Farmers Valley, where he eventually became the machine shop supervisor before retiring.
After his retirement, Emery became someone everyone could count on to lend a helping hand. Whether it was repairing a roof, fixing a plumbing issue or getting an old car running again, he had a knack for finishing the job — and doing it right. His children often joked about his high standards, coining the term “Emery-tight.” Sometimes the screws were so tight, they couldn’t be loosened again! He constantly worried about the size of his woodpile each year and kept cutting and splitting his firewood for his woodstove until the end. He was a tough yet good man, and he will be deeply missed by many.
Emery was a man of many passions. He and his wife, Arlie, shared a love for square dancing, often attending local and national events together. He also cherished time spent hunting with his sons, grandsons and great-grandson, a tradition that kept the family close over the years.
He was also a member of the Keating Township Concerned Citizens group, reflecting his commitment to his community.
In addition to his beloved wife, Arlie, Emery is survived by five sons, Jonathan L. Gallup of Shinglehouse; Gerald P. (Laurie) Gallup of Fort Mill, S.C.; Emery A. (Nina) Gallup Jr. of Bel Air, Md.; Shane P. (Annette) Gallup of Denver, N.C.; and Gregory C. (Cristina) Gallup of Rochester, Minn.; and one daughter, Loretta “Lori” Bolles of Mount Jewett; and a daughter-in-law, Melissa Gallup of Eldred. Emery was a proud grandfather to Louisa, Shane, Jonathan, Anthony, Meghan, Kyle, Wade, Jesse, Samantha, Jessica, Alison, David, Whitney, Maggie, Kayla and Katie; and a great-grandfather to 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Cecil (Phyllis) Gallup of Smethport; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Leslie D. Gallup; and one sister, Carol Gallup.
A memorial service will be held in Emery’s honor at 11 a.m. Friday (Aug. 1, 2025) at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes Inc., 2 Bank St., with the Rev. Max Simms officiating. A celebration of life will immediately follow at Smethport Methodist Church.
Memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
