Pirates manage season-low one hit in 11-inning loss to Diamondbacks

    By Colin Beazley Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

PITTSBURGH (TNS) — Mike Burrows had the best start of his young major league career. The Pirates’ sleepy offense meant it wasn’t enough for a win.

Burrows completed six scoreless innings, his longest career start, but the Pirates managed just one hit in a 1-0, 11-inning loss to the Diamondbacks on Friday night at PNC Park. A flyout moved automatic runner Corbin Carroll to third, then Eugenio Suarez hit a sacrifice fly to score him.

It was the Pirates’ 14th shutout loss this season.

Braxton Ashcraft took the loss, dropping to 2-1, despite not allowing a hit in two innings of relief. Diamondbacks reliever Anthony DeSclafani pitched four scoreless innings for the win, improving to 1-1. Kevin Ginkel pitched the 11th for his third save of the year.

Burrows didn’t allow a baserunner until the fourth inning and didn’t allow a hit until the fifth, when left fielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. beat out a grounder up the third base line. Burrows allowed three hits and a walk in six innings, striking out five.

Unfortunately for Burrows, the Pirates had even less success off Arizona starter Ryne Nelson. Nelson also completed six innings, but allowed just one hit, a Tommy Pham triple off the Clemente Wall in the second. He walked two and struck out four.

The Diamondbacks got two runners on in both the seventh and eighth innings against the Pirates bullpen. In the seventh, two Arizona hitters singled off Isaac Mattson. Mattson got out of it by fielding a hard-hit grounder off his leg, then striking out first baseman Tristin English. In the eighth, Dennis Santana had two two-out walks before getting Suarez to fly out to left.

    It was over when …

… the Pirates couldn’t score automatic runner Liover Peguero in the 11th. He advanced to third on an Andrew McCutchen fly out, but Bryan Reynolds and Nick Gonzales could not bring him in.

Reynolds lined out to left, where Gurriel needed to dive to catch it. Peguero wasn’t tagging and could not run home. Gonzales grounded out weakly to end it.

    On the mound

Burrows had all four of his pitches working, including a slider that was nearly three miles an hour faster than usual. He’d rebounded from his disappointing start in Minnesota with a solid outing against the White Sox, but Friday was another step in his development.

    At the plate

Friday was the third time this season the Pirates have been held to three or fewer hits.

    Most valuable player

DeSclafani didn’t allow a hit in relief. He walked two, but struck out three.

    Up next

The Pirates and Diamondbacks continue their three-game set at 6:40 p.m. Saturday. Andrew Heaney (4-9, 5.03 ERA) will start for Pittsburgh, looking to rebound from his recent skid. Right-hander Merrill Kelly (9-5, 3.32) will start for Arizona.
