$6M banana eaten by museum-goer: ‘Historical level stupidity’
(TNS) — You could say this story is, ahem, bananas.
A multi-million-dollar work of art — one that’s simply an actual banana duct-taped to a wall — was eaten by a hungry museum-goer the other day.
According to Artnet, Italian visual artist Maurizio Cattelan’s $6.2 million banana — a piece he has deemed “The Comedian” — was on display at the Centre Pompidou-Metz in France when it met its gastronomical fate.
A statement from the museum explains that security “rapidly and calmly intervened.” A new banana was quickly put up as a replacement, which happens regularly, the statement explains, as bananas are perishable (shocking, we know).
Hypebeats reports how this actually isn’t even the first time “The Comedian” has been eaten since it made its debut in 2019: Once was by a performance artist named David Datuna during an act titled “Hungry Artist;” the other, by a hungry student at a Seoul, South Korea, museum in 2023.
“Historical level stupidity,” wrote someone in the New York Post comment section.
“Stop with the nonsense, go to a good produce store, get a Chiquita banana, and enjoy,” someone else recommended. “[It’s] a much better taste.”
The Centre Pompidou-Metz’s website explains that “The Comedian” is part of an exhibit deemed “Endless Sunday,” which is running now through February 2027.
“Since it opened in 2010, the Centre Pompidou-Metz has been privileged to host numerous major works loaned by the Musée National d’Art Moderne, works that have marked the museum’s history and exhibitions,” the website states.
“The Endless Sunday is part of this dynamic, offering an immersion in the collection through a multitude of different media, including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, installation, video and film, in an unprecedented dialogue with the world of Maurizio Cattelan.”
How long the newest iteration of “The Comedian” will last before it gets eaten again remains to be seen.
