Andersen fuels Thunder Chickens win over Ramblers
WARREN — The Bradford Ramblers traveled to Warren to take on the Thunder Chickens at Betts Field on Tuesday night in the return matchup of their home-at-home series. The Ramblers, looking to avenge their home loss in the prior week, saw the Thunder Chickens sweep the series instead, claiming a 10-4 victory on home turf. The Ramblers came out swinging, plating two runs in the first inning. Oliver Cokely worked a full count walk, later advancing to third base to set up a Nick Popiel RBI single. Blake Sherk was then able to drive in Popiel to give the visitors the early edge, 2-0.
Sherk then took to the mound for the Ramblers. His two first inning strikeouts combined with catcher Beau Havers throwing out a runner trying to steal second kept the visitors in front early on. In the second inning Theo Andersen was brought in to pitch for the home team and made quick work of the Ramblers striking out two. His big inning wasn’t over just yet though. The bottom of the second saw some fireworks for the Thunder Chickens. Phinn Ristan drew a leadoff walk and Luca Pellegrino hit an RBI double to get the home team on the board. Andersen followed that up with a blast of his own that rolled all the way to the wall for an inside-the-park two run homer to put Warren in front 3-2.
Andersen and Sherk shined on the mound in the third inning. Each pitcher recorded 3 strike outs in the frame, although the Thunder Chickens were able to add two runs via a Carson Welka RBI single and a Ristan RBI double. Sherk ended the night with 7 punchouts in total while Andersen had 5.
The Ramblers weren’t going to go away quietly however. In the top of the fourth with Popiel and Sherk on first and second Evan Luna came up to bat and hit a two RBI single into center field to bring the feisty Ramblers to within one, with the score now being 5-4. The Thunder Chickens quickly answered back however with an impressive two out rally in the bottom of the fourth. Gage Brinsky relieved Sherk on the mound and struck out two of the first three batters he faced. Things changed quickly after that however, as Titus Hoak found himself at bat with the bases loaded and delivered a two RBI double to left field. Ruthie Alplanap followed up with a 2 RBI single of his own, and Pete Bailey capped the inning off with an RBI single to put the home team in the driver’s seat with a 10-4 advantage.
Brinsky finished strong on the mound for the Ramblers but he was matched by Bailey and Hoak on the mound for the Thunder Chickens. Unfortunately for the visitors the game ended in an 11-4 final in favor of the home team.
The Ramblers return to action Saturday at Pitt-Bradford as they host a round robin tournament.
