Diocese of Erie releases clergy appointment list
ERIE — The Most Rev. Lawrence T. Persico, bishop of Erie, appointed several clergy throughout the Diocese of Erie to new assignments.
Pastor assignments typically span six years, fostering stability and continuity for both pastors and parish communities. Persico emphasized that clergy and administrators must remain attentive to the true demands of the priestly vocation, which calls them to serve wherever they are most needed.
“When a priest responds to this call with courage and humility, it has the power to stir something deep within the hearts of others,” said Persico. “I am grateful – but not surprised – that these assignments were met with such generosity. It is profound to witness the strength and deep commitment to the Holy Spirit that is present in our clergy.”
Appointments are traditionally made at the start of the parish fiscal year, July 1. This year, however, the diocese encountered unexpected challenges, including requests for retirement and leaves of absence due to health concerns.
The changes released are effective Aug. 12. The appointments were shared with affected parishioners at Masses during the weekend of July 19.
Reappointed was the Rev. James G. Gutting, parochial administrator pro tempore of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Parish, with its secondary mission church of St. Francis of Assisi, both in Bradford, until Dec. 8.
The Rev. John J. Jacquel was granted sabbatical, which continues until Dec. 8.
Appointments are as follows: The Rev. Richard J. Allen, pastor of St. Eulalia Parish, Coudersport, with its secondary mission church of Sacred Heart, Genesee, and its secondary churches of St. Augustine, Austin, and St. Bibiana, Galeton, continuing until July 31, 2031.
The Rev. Christopher A. Beran, pastor of St. Boniface Parish, Kersey, and part-time campus minister at Elk County Catholic School System, continuing until July 31, 2031.
The Rev. Benjamin J. Daghir, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish, McKean, and to the chaplain of Cathedral Preparatory School, Erie, continuing until July 31, 2031.
The Rev. Luke A. Daghir, Parochial Vicar of Our Lady of Peace Parish, and to celebrate Masses at Mercyhurst University, both in Erie, continuing until July 31, 2028.
