Olean man jailed for fight, drug possession

An Olean, N.Y., man is in McKean County Jail for allegedly trying to start a fight with a baseball bat in an East Bradford bar early Friday, and being caught with cocaine and methamphetamine upon arrest.

Shane A. Rice, 35, of 136 S. First St., is charged with possession with intent to deliver, a felony; four counts of possession and one of possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanors; possessing an instrument of crime, a first-degree misdemeanor; and disorderly conduct – engage in fighting, a summary offense.

The criminal complaint alleged that at 1:51 a.m. Friday, police were dispatched to JJ’s Saloon on East Main Street for a physical altercation in progress. When police arrived, witnesses said a man — later identified as Rice — went in the bar holding a small wooden bat and started fighting with people in the bar. Before police arrived, Rice fled the scene on foot, heading toward Seaward Avenue.

At 2:18 a.m., police caught up to Rice on North Kendall Avenue and placed him under arrest. When Rice was searched, police found 13.01 grams of methamphetamine, 2.46 grams of cocaine packaged in four bags, 3.74 grams of marijuana, 4.5 pills of buprenorphine and a digital scale. Surveillance footage from JJ’s was obtained, and police saw Rice enter the bar with the bat and engage in fighting with patrons, the complaint stated.

He was arraigned early Friday before District Judge Rich Luther and remanded to jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. He is scheduled for Central Court on Thursday.
