PIAA advances proposal to add shot clocks at varsity, JV basketball games

(TNS) — Call it a long time coming, but Pennsylvania is likely ready to join other states across the country in utilizing a shot clock at varsity and junior varsity basketball games.

On Wednesday, the state’s governing body on sports passed on a first reading the introduction of a 35-second shot clock.

The proposal must pass two additional readings, but it’s likely the shot clock era will begin with the 2028-29 season.

Last month, the PIAA Basketball Steering committee voted down a proposal that recommended adding a shot clock, mainly based on a quick timeline for the 2026-27 sports season.

“It wouldn’t be for this school year coming up because it doesn’t give anybody enough time to react,” PIAA Executive Director Dr. Bob Lombardi said at the time.

“But is there a timeline in the future?”

Among the main concerns in pushing the shot clock era “up” to 2027-28 or earlier is the additional costs to schools, and training operators and game officials.

All of these concerns, and more, were voiced by school administrators, who returned PIAA surveys to the basketball committee.

According the PIAA, the committee broke down responses by district and included a separate analysis of officials’ responses.

“I think the committee did a great job in reviewing all the surveys and responses,” Lombardi said Wednesday.

Thirty-one states and Washington D.C. are currently using or in the process of adding shot clocks in high school basketball.
