‘Round the Square: Old papers
HERE: Many of you have seen The Era’s Main Street office, at number 43, between Kabob’s at The Option at 41 Main and Main Street Mercantile at 45 Main.
We were looking back at some old papers — from 1886, when it was The Daily Era — and noted our building’s address in an advertisement for Emery & Weaver, L. Emery Jr. & Co.’s Great Supply House at 41, 43 and 45 Main St. and Exchange Place in Bradford.
It was established in 1876. “To be comfortable is to be happy. Home sweet home. No thought more pleasant. See what we can do toward making home pleasant. We must call your attention once more to the great Vogt’s Refrigerator! Best made. Its act is a cold one. Everything in the line of goods that go to help cool the sweating brow.”
Next in the ad’s offerings is “Rubber paint! Best in the world. All the beautiful shades.”
And don’t forget that staple of a restful summer, “Hammocks! Our stock piled is a cord high, representing every imaginable style. Our 90c hammock for children is a universal favorite.”
Looking for more for the children? This is the right place.
“Our great hit this season has been boys’ and girls’ tricycles! Our sales have been double that of any previous year. Our stock is never low on these goods.”
What more might the store have in stock? “Our great novelty — Spring baby carriage! The very name of which affords great pleasure to the little ones is still meeting with great success. Buy no other.”
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays were extra special at the store, with balloon ascensions.
And one more service for the community — “Eyes tested free!”
