‘Round the Square: Notes from readers
NOTES FROM READERS: Every now and again we like to catch up on the notes we’ve received from our readers, whether they’re regarding ’Round the Square or something else.
We saw this posted on a regular reader’s Facebook page and wanted to share it:
Recently, The World Atlas named Bradford one of the best small towns for a weekend retreat. It was one of nine towns chosen for the honor. The list also included Gettysburg, Ligonier, Lititz, Ridgway, Bedford, Carlisle, Williamsburg and Wellsboro.
The list notes that Bradford is the birthplace of the Zippo lighter and hosts the nation’s oldest oil refinery. It recommends that visitors stop by the Zippo/Case Museum and Flagship Store as well as the Marilyn Horne Museum and Exhibit Center.
To quote the article, “Bradford is small, charming and full of history.”
Another reader sent in this tidbit: “With regard to the ’Round the Square column from June 26 and June 27 concerning the early settlement of the Bradford area, an added note is that in the ‘early times’ steamboats would journey up the Allegheny River from Pittsburgh to what was then known as Olean Point. Supposedly, the first steamboat that arrived in Olean, N.Y., on May 12, 1830, was named the Alleghany. However, due to lumbering and the forest clearing, soil/silt runoff made the Allegheny River impassable for the steamboats. (Note: As is known, Allegheny/Allegany/Alleghany is spelled either way, depending on the locale.)”
Another reader, Jim Belardia, called to say he saw something of local interest on a recent episode of “Jeopardy!”
The clue was: “This can be accomplished by rubbing two sticks together or just using a Zippo.”
We know you know the answer.
