Other Voices: Get back to basics
After years of becoming annoyed by what I see on television as well as watching the actions of so many “so-called” Americans, I felt inclined to write. NOW thoroughly disgusted, I’ll try to explain.
Among my many friends and acquaintances, we all notice the serious decline by — yes, the old and young alike — in manners, politeness and etiquette, even basic decenc. I better include “work ethic” in that as well. Since I’m over the hill, the decline of all the above started with “do your own thing” in the 1960s. Recently, our elected officials have put on a real show for the next generation — the rude, crude behavior shown by those we should respect must run like a comedy reality show to the rest of the world.
It’s not unusual to have an elevator conversation with mature, dedicated workers of almost every business referring to their fellow employees who consistently slack off, unless direct supervision is in the vicinity. And, yes, people often call off on beautiful days. I call it the entitlement attitude.
There are bright spots, though, as welcoming, friendly, knowledgeable workers now stand out like bright lights. In the past this was the normal, mainly because you’d want a good referral from your current employer as you look to progress at whatever line of work you pursued? Today you might start out as a clerk, stock person, cleaning maintenance, etc., but years later end up as a senior manager, business owner or skilled tradesperson — and all that comes with those positions — including financial security, with an adequate retirement package.
Funny thing, now I see YouTube has many selections for learning proper behavior as well as etiquette for young and old. Hello, America, what happened to this society that YouTube segments on these subjects seem necessary?
Always be a GOOD example for anyone to follow. Proper manners, politeness and decency all matter for a better community as well as the country. Please, God, bless America again!
