Michael Baker
KANE — Michael P. Baker, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and respected attorney, passed away peacefully at home July 2, 2025, at the age of 80.
Born May 16, 1945, in Kane, Michael was the son of the late Clifford “Bud” Baker and Frances Bentz Baker. He was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Harris; and brother-in-law, John Huntzinger.
Michael graduated from Kane Area High School in 1963. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Dickinson College and his law degree from Dickinson School of Law, laying the foundation for a long and impactful legal career. For 45 years, he practiced law in Kane, Mount Jewett and Smethport, where he built a reputation for his professionalism and unwavering commitment to his practice, Woods & Baker. Throughout his career, he served as the longtime solicitor for Kane Area School District, Hamlin Township, Kane Area Industrial Development Council and McKean County Register of Wills, Recorder of Deeds, Prothonotary & Clerk of the Courts, Tax Claim Bureau and Industrial Development Authority & Council, offering his legal expertise with the utmost care and dedication to the community.
In addition to his legal work, Michael was deeply involved in local clubs and organizations, including Kiwanis, Rotary, Elks Club, Kane Country Club, Olmstead Manor, Kane Community Hospital, Kane Chamber of Commerce, Kane Alumni Association, Kinzua Bridge Foundation, Presbyterian Church of Kane, and ane Fish and Game Club. He found great joy in being part of these communities, where he formed lasting friendships. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing with his sons, pursuits that brought him closer to nature and allowed him to form cherished memories.
A devoted family man, Michael is survived by his loving wife, Jan Huntzinger Baker, and their three sons, Jeffrey (Jill), Nicholas and Christopher; sister-in-law Susan Huntzinger Ciffo; grandchildren, Micheau, Hudson, Grace and Henry; nieces, Amy Mills, Holly Harris, Wendy Huntzinger and Polly Berry; nephew, John (Susan) Huntzinger; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Michael will be remembered for his sharp mind, generous heart and his unwavering dedication to both his family and community. He touched the lives of all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, integrity and service.
A private committal service will be held for immediate family members. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date to honor Michael’s memory with friends and loved ones. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
