Elk Country Visitor Center posts July programs
BENEZETTE — The Elk Country Visitor Center will host several public programs this July.
Saturday, July 12
Hunting, Hides and Heritage: The Historical Role of Elk, 2 p.m.
Discover how elk have been a significant resource for humans throughout history. Uncover how early Native Americans used elk throughout precolonial history. Find out how early European settlers utilized elk during colonization. Uncover elk’s cultural significance in the past to the present, and bring to light why people hold so much value to the Wapiti.
Sunday, July 13
What’s in the Dirt? Noon to 4 p.m.
Have you ever wanted to work on an archaeological dig? This is a unique opportunity to experience the science of uncovering history that people have left behind beneath our feet. We have numerous artifacts buried that you can stop in and try to discover and recognize. This is a great activity for families.
Saturday, July 19
PA Mushroom Foraging, 1 to 4 p.m.
Members of the Central PA Mushroom Club will be onsite to provide information on mushrooming in our part of the state. We will forage on the grounds of the Elk Country Visitor Center and then identify the mushrooms found. This will be a great educational event.
Sunday, July 20
Elk 101, 2 p.m.
New to learning about elk? Join staff for the basic breakdown as we learn about elk history, elk ecology and elk behavior. Are you a seasoned “Elkspert?” We bet you’ll learn something new, too.
Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27
Elk Expo, 8 a.m.
