July programs at Kinzua Bridge park
Kinzua Bridge State Park Complex will offer a variety of programs in July. Programs may be postponed or cancelled in the event of adverse weather conditions. For more information on a park program, call the park office at (814) 778-5467.
On July 4 at noon will be History Day with a focus on the history of white-tailed deer in Pennsylvania. This is a program about the history of management of the PA White-tailed Deer in the classroom of the Visitor Center. Join John Dzemyan to discover his display along with stories and tales on the history of Pennsylvania’s White-Tailed Deer. Retired from the Game Commission, Dzemyan has plenty of experience and knowledge. Meet in the Visitor Center Classroom.
At 1 p.m. will be a white-tailed deer walk with Dzemyan leading a walk for participants to learn about the plants, ecosystems, and conservation methods of deer. Meet in front of the Visitor Center.
At 11 a.m. July 5 will be Intro to Archery. Practice your archery skills in a safe and fun environment. Participants will cover the necessary safety procedures of shooting a bow, as well as the technical skills involved in hitting a target. Target and bows provided. This program is free and open to the public. Meet on the eastern side of the building.
At 1 p.m. will be a vernal pool walk. Join park staff as they point out some of the many attributes of the new vernal pools and the ideas that led to their establishment along the General Kane Trail. Wear appropriate footwear and dress for the weather. Sunscreen, bug spray, and water are suggested. Meet in the overflow parking lot.
From 3 to 5 p.m. July 6 will be a program on fantastic fireflies. Join park staff in the first-floor exhibits near the classroom to hear about Pennsylvania’s state insect: the firefly. Hear how you can support their populations on your own property and learn about citizen science opportunities where you can report your own sightings.
At 10 a.m. July 13, Ask the Naturalist will be held. The park naturalist will be roving around the park and visitor center to answer questions about nature and history.
At 11 a.m. July 19 will be a wellness walk. Join park staff on a walk around the park to soak up nature. Dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear. Meet in front of the Visitor Center.
From 3 to 5 p.m. July 20 and July 21 will be a program on Tales of the Tornado. Join staff near the western entrance to the visitor center for a walk down memory lane for the anniversary of the viaduct collapse. Learn from staff the events that occurred on that fateful day, then walk the serpentine path and read handwritten accounts of construction workers that were in the park when the tornado hit. Participants will also view historical photographs and be able to see how the landscape has changed over time.
