Free July programs at Sinnemahoning State Park
AUSTIN — A series of free programs have been scheduled for July at Sinnemahoning State Park.
July 4th is Fish for Free Day, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park. Stop by George B. Stevenson Reservoir to cast a line. A park educator will be on hand to assist, and fishing rods, tackle and bait will be provided. Meet at the Lake Day Use Area.
From 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. July 4 will be Fireflies at 40 Maples. Join a park educator and learn about the lives of the glowing beetles before going for a stroll to enjoy nature’s fireworks at dusk.
July 5, from 9 to 11 a.m. will be a tree identification hike. Embark on an approximately three-mile hike on the lowlands trial with a park naturalist to explore and identify a variety of trees found in the park. Meet at the Wildlife Center.
From 3 to 4 p.m. July 5 will be an insect investigation. Join a park naturalist in an investigation of the amazing diversity of insects found at Sinnemahoning. All tools to catch and study these small creatures will be provided. Meet at the Wildlife Center Classroom.
Starting at 9 a.m. July 6 will be Pontoon Tours of the Stevenson Reservoir. Join park staff for a relaxing and informative tour around the lake, as we cruise the shoreline of the George B. Stevenson Reservoir in search of wildlife. Group size is limited. To reserve a seat, pre-register. Registration is not required but is strongly recommended. Meet at the Lake Day Use Area. Register on the DCNR website.
From 1 to 2 p.m. July 12 will be a children’s story and stroll with Little Red Bat. Bring your little ones down to the Wildlife Center classroom to make a bat craft and enjoy a reading of Little Red Bat by Carole Gerber. Afterwards we will go for a stroll around the Wildlife Center and look at the park’s bat boxes. Meet at the Wildlife Center Classroom
From 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. July 12 will be a bat count. Join a park naturalist and help count the bats emerging for a night of feeding over the park. Data collected will be contributed to the PA Game Commission’s Appalachian Bat Count. Meet at the Wildlife Viewing Area.

From noon to 3 p.m. July 19 there will be a program on Field to Fork: Panfish. Take part in this unique program, learn about the panfish found in George B. Stevenson Reservoir. Next, learn how to fish for them, wet a line and see what you can catch. Lastly program participants will have the opportunity to learn how to clean and prepare their catch and try a few samples. No fishing license is required for this program. All equipment will be provided. Pre-registration is required for this event, space is limited. Meets at: Lake Day Use Area
From 10 to 11 p.m. July 19 is the Moth Sheet Meet Up. Stay up late to celebrate National Moth Week. A park naturalist will have our moth sheet set up to attract moths for examination. Discover the diversity of moth species in the park and learn more about why moths are an important part of our local ecosystems. Meets at: Campground Amphitheater

From 9 a.m. to noon July 26 will be Kayaking For Beginners. If you have been looking for a chance to try Kayaking without having to buy all of the equipment this is your chance. Learn the basics of how to kayak from a park educator on shore then take one of the park’s kayaks out for paddle around the George B. Stevenson Reservoir. All equipment will be provided by the park. Meets at: Lake Day Use Area. Registration required.
