More than books: Bradford Library running annual fundraiser
The Bradford Area Public Library is about much more than just books. It is a vital resource that plays a critical role in supporting the community. The library is currently conducting its annual mail-based fundraising campaign, having sent out mailers to locals across the area.
Last year, the library contributed a value of $792,000 to our community, according to the mailer. More than $383,000 worth of adult books were borrowed and $109,000 in children’s books were borrowed. Patrons listened to $7,000 in audiobooks and attended $6,500 worth of programs.
Last year, library staff set a goal to expand their technological resources and digital literacy programs. And they have made important strides in those areas. However, with the changing times, local support is more important than ever.
“With new cuts to federal funding already impacting us, we must work even harder to protect and build on these achievements,” wrote director Becky Feightner in the letter. “Local support is critical to ensure that our community continues to benefit from essential technology, reliable internet access and innovative programs.”
This year, library staff hopes for further upgrades to their technology infrastructure.
“To keep pace with community needs, we must enhance internet access, update our digital resources and maintain critical online services,” wrote Feightner. “These improvements will ensure that everyone can benefit from reliable technology and vital community support.”
Every dollar donated is another vote for keeping library services robust. The library serves not only the city of Bradford but also Corydon, Foster and Lafayette townships and the Borough of Lewis Run. They are part of the Seneca Library District, which is made up of 17 member libraries in Cameron, Elk, Forest, McKean and Warren counties.
Feightner hopes people will make an even greater impact by encouraging municipal leaders to support the library through local funding. While the city does provide millage, funding has decreased over the last several years. Currently, the library gets much of its local funding from its endowment, but that money won’t last forever. The state funding it receives is often earmarked for operational expenses.
“Your voice matters – let them know that strong library services are essential to a thriving community,” Feightner wrote.
Donors can make checks payable to Bradford Area Public Library. People can give a single donation or choose to give a recurring monthly gift. Another option is to donate online at bradfordlibrary.org.
