Joey Porter Sr. explains why Aaron Rodgers signing will work for Steelers
(TNS) – Steelers legend Joey Porter Sr. believes Pittsburgh signing Aaron Rodgers was the perfect move for the upcoming season.
Porter recently joined Cam Heyward on his podcast and explained why he is a big fan of the addition.
“Man, me being honest, I was excited,” Joey Porter said. “I got to play against Aaron Rodgers and watch Aaron Rodgers do his thing. I feel like he’s got a lot of juice left in the arm, you know.
“The way our team is built, the way our defense is built – and I love Mason [Rudolph] and all the young guys – but the resume’s ain’t going to compare to what Aaron Rodgers really got and can do. If we show up like we did last year with our defense.. I just trust him.“
The 41-year-old Rodgers came into the NFL in 2005, about halfway through Porter’s career.
Aaron Rodgers isn’t the same player now that he was when Porter was in the league, but Porter still believes he can play. As much as anything, he trusts him to not make mistakes.
“He’s not a guy that’s going to go out there and trick it off, you know what I mean?” Porter said. “He ain’t going to put us in bad situations. We ain’t asking him to save us. We’re asking him to not lose the four games we lose every year that we’re not supposed to lose, you know what I’m saying.”
The Steelers finished with a 10-7 record in 2024, but the season could have been even better if not for losses to the Colts, Cowboys and Browns — teams that finished last year with a losing record.
“He’ll win those games,” Porter continued. “He ain’t gotta be special. He can just go out there and do him and if he’s healthy, if we keep him upright, I like our chances with him.”
Joey Porter Sr.’s son Joey Porter Jr. is entering his third season with Pittsburgh after being drafted by the Steelers in the second round of the 2023 NFL draft.
Porter Sr. admitted that it’s going to be a little strange having his son play with Aaron Rodgers after he competed against him.

“It’s weird,” he joked. “I want to hear that conversation with him to my son when JJ probably meets him. He’ll be like, ‘Man, I played against your dad.’
“It was a couple of people that I thought that he was going to run across that with. [Tom] Brady was one. But Aaron Rodgers sticked around long enough to be one. But yea, that’s different.”
